DC
Comics
has been rebooting their universe to get back their loyal followers as well as
to entice new ones.
With all the room space comic
collecting consumes as well as the dust it complies, online reading is somewhat
tolerable these days. I mean… if there’s a time to protect your budget by
taking aim at a lot of bootleg and unsolicited reading materials, this has to
be it.
So with DC finally correcting
an almost-century problem where heroes put on their pants before their briefs,
they are making heads turn by laying down the sexuality of one of their most
popular superheroes.
The Green Lantern costumes has had a lot of reincarnations and while
most of those wearers have the iconic outfits on, the first one, Alan Scott suits up wearing red and
green.
Christmas colors!
This stylish concoction could
have triggered DC decision to turn this Green
Lantern gay. Yes, he is still the ass-kicking hero we know and love about
these Green Lanterns but the only thing here is that he kisses other dudes as
well. Now I have no idea how his re-emergence would hurt the lives of the Justice League and Hal Jordan (the version Ryan
Reynolds allegedly destroyed) and John
Stewart (the black dude) in particular but certainly this should re-awaken Alan Scott. The character that is Alan
Scott hasn’t had a break in DC-land since the entry of Jordan and Stewart –
languishing in role as a cameo or as a flashback… and that kind of sucks.
The unfortunate thing for this
character surgery is that this is coming from the heels of Northstar’s marriage. The former Alpha Flight leader and current X-Men member (no pun here) came out in 1992 and will wed his
long-time boyfriend this year. This will be a collector’s choice for some since
this is the first time in Marvel, DC,
or in any comic book that gay marriage will be employed.
Nonetheless the Alan Scott revision
will “come out” in the second issue of Earth
2.
Hopefully it will garner the
same success it had when they gender bend Batgirl.
Game over.
